BusIT
involves greater use of scheduled local bus
services in Eastleigh and Home to School services
or ‘school specials’ in the Waterside.
Travel
by bus gives opportunities to get
fit, increase independence and improve
road
safety awareness.
The
BusIT pilots involve some changes to bus times,
extending journeys and better publicity. Pupils
at pilot schools can get a free BusIT pack which
includes a handy timetable, money-saving offers
and a BusIT card which will allow pupils to
travel from home to school and back, with a
change of bus if needed, for only £1 a
day.
Pupils
of pilot schools in the Eastleigh area can check
their bus times or plan their journey on a special
journey
planner. Pupils of pilot schools on the
Waterside can also check their school bus timetables
on a new web page.

| This
initiative aims to encourage greater use of local
buses for journeys to school in the Eastleigh
area. The project will aim to see that bus timetables
suit school start and finish times where possible,
and that there are enough seats available at the
right time. Providing information and promoting
the services available will feature highly in
this pilot, which will offer personalised travel
planning, a web-based
journey planner, and incentives for pupils
who switch to the bus on a regular basis.
The
pilot schools in Eastleigh are Fryern Infant,
Fryern Junior, St Swithun Wells Catholic Voluntary
Aided and Crestwood College, Thornden School
and The Toynbee School. Initial work has been
with the secondary schools and has so far involved:
•
extending morning 507 to Valley Park and
re-timing the afternoon journey to better
suit school finish time at the Toynbee School
• an extra bus from Valley Park at
0755 for Thornden School
• setting up a new BusIT website and
journey planner
• BusIT cards allowing school travel
for £1 a day |
Home
to school travel services-Waterside
Hampshire
County Council currently provides a large number
of Home to School Transport Services (HTST)
or ‘School Specials’ where there
are groups of children entitled to transport.
The aim of this new project is to open up the
service to non-entitled children, at a small
cost, to encourage greater use of the services.
Opportunities to better cater for the extended
school day, after-school activities and breakfast
or homework clubs will be investigated.
The
pilot schools on the Waterside are Hythe Primary,
Orchard Infant and Orchard Junior, Applemore
College and Noadswood School. Initial work has
been with the secondary schools and has so far
involved:
• afternoon 519 journey re-timed to better
suit school finish time at Noadswood
• re-routing Bluestar 8 via Applemore
College at 1645 to suit after school activities
• BusIT cards allowing school travel for
£1 a day
School
bus times for the Waterside pilot schools are
now on a dedicated web
page for easy reference.
Cllr
Ken Thornber, Leader of Hampshire County
Council said
"Through providing a better
alternative for the school run, our overall
aim is for children to be able to travel
to school safely and conveniently, while
creating a better environment and that's
got to be good news for everyone." |
